When the Distance Between Idea and Implementation Collapses

On June 10th of 2026, everything I thought I knew about software engineering changed.

Four decades of work at places like Motorola, THQ, and Disney reinforced two ideas; engineers are expensive and slow. Whether you were talking about control systems for semiconductors, or video games for the PlayStation, projects always took longer than you thought and cost a lot more than you wanted to pay. This past winter I had watched a good friend sink a Mercedes worth of cash to build a prototype phone app, and he thought he was doing it “on the cheap.”

Then, on the morning of June 10th, I saw Fable 5 appear as a model in Claude Code. I thought, “I wonder what I can do with that?”

We had been facing a gnarly problem with our call center that had been haunting me for weeks. Sales were down, but we weren’t sure why. I had talked to all the team members but they didn’t seem to know either. I suspected the answers lay in the call recordings from our phone system, but I had no systematic way to look at them. I had a cloud drive full of conversations. Almost twenty thousand recordings and transcripts to be exact. And no good way to look at them. Did it even matter if people spoke on the phone any more? Were we clinging to the past?

This is the kind of problem that drives me crazy. Lots of data. No information. Maybe Fable could help, but first, I didn’t even really know what I was looking at. All I had were the credentials to connect to the cloud drive. I couldn’t even browse it like a normal file folder.

And that’s the point where any sane person just gives up. Before ChatGPT and Claude, I would need to sit down and create a specification, and read a lot of documents, and design out what I wanted, then give it to a project manager, and then argue with them over the specification and then spend six to eight weeks waiting for something to come back that didn’t work, only to argue about it all over again.

It gave me a headache just thinking about it. Why had I spent most of my career in development?

That morning, with no planning whatsoever, I made a new folder, calling it “Phonerator,” then opened Claude Code in that folder, selected Fable and started to talk to it.

“I have a bunch of data in a cloud drive I need to look at.”

Like the eternally optimistic helper that it is, Fable responded, “I can help with that. Do you know where the files are?”

“I do,” I answered, “and the credentials to login are in this file…” I pasted the credentials into a text file in the folder and gave the path to Fable. Then I added, “Look, I don’t even have a good way to look at these files. Is there any way you could build, I don’t know, something like an old school Norton Commander style interface? A dual pane file browser, the kind of thing that lets you look at two directories at once?”

Fable responded, “No problem. Let’s see what we have.”

Five minutes later, Fable produced a split window file browser, written from scratch, linked to my cloud drive. I could finally browse the files. “Hey, could you make it possible to sort these call records by date, franchise, or agent who took the call?”

“Certainly,” Fable responded. And after more Cogitating, Fable returned with tabs in the left browser pane. All I had to do was click on Date and the records were sorted by date. Click by Franchise, and they were organized by Franchise, and the same for the Agent view.

And that’s when it hit me, Fable was implementing my changes about as fast as I could ask for them. No specification. No long planning process. Just me, Fable, and an evolving idea.

“Make the right pane show the transcripts when I click on the file,” I told Fable, and moments later it was done. Fable and I fell into a rhythm. “Can you do this?” I asked. And the answer was yes, and yes, and yes, and yes. Always yes.

There’s a story about a famous game developer named Notch. From an industry insider perspective, he was a renegade. He experimented with Java instead of the industry standard C++ or C#1 used by the big game developers, because Java was easy to learn. He released his game simultaneously for Windows, Mac, and Linux when everyone else focused exclusively for Windows or consoles. His game featured blocky low-resolution graphics in an era obsessed with high polygon counts and photo-realism. But working fast and simple, and alone, let Notch figure out how to make his game fun. You might have heard of his game. It’s one of the most successful video games ever developed. It’s called Minecraft and Microsoft paid more than $2.5B for the game and the studio Notch founded to develop it.

Working with Fable to create my “Phonerator” felt like playing with Notch’s video game. The one defining feature of Minecraft is that you can build just about anything you can imagine. Iterating with Fable felt the same. “Can we analyze the transcripts to look for call patterns?” I asked, and Fable created a pipeline to use an inexpensive AI model from a competing company to analyze batches of calls. “Can we find out how often a sales person gets stopped because they have to talk to an owner?” Fable added a red flag for those calls. “Can we study the call recording and look for tone and friendliness?” Fable found another way to analyze the audio so we could rate the agents.

In and of themselves, any of these features may not sound impressive, but to execute all of them **in a single day**? I had never experienced anything like it. I didn’t come to Fable with a design specification, I came with a **need**, and holy cow Fable just met it.

By the time dinner time rolled around, yes I had been in my chair for almost ten straight hours, but that was better than ten weeks, or ten months, and I had in front of me a fully functional tool for studying phone call patterns, and I got the insight I was looking for. Conversations mattered, a lot. The sales team’s close rate more than doubled when they talked with a customer. What’s more, I learned “rule creep2” blocked our agents from booking parties while the customer was on the phone. Neither of those were obvious from looking at a list of transcripts or recordings.

Yet what was obvious was that everything I knew about software development had just changed. Fast, Flexible, and Fun development was now at my fingertips, and it was called Fable.

  2. Franchise owners had requested rules in specific situations to force sales agents to check with them before accepting a booking. Individually they looked small and reasonable, but in aggregate they hurt sales, especially when the answer 99 out of 100 times to the question “can I book this party” was “yes book the party.”
